Jim,
I'm on the northern end of Delmarva, usually Zone 6-7, but this winter
has been incredibly mild. I even had lettuce and cilantro survive the
winter, which puts me in Zone 8 this year. My fig tree didn't even get
burned back.
I'm seeing new shoots about 1" tall in my courtyard, which faces south
and is VERY protected. In the open areas, I'm just seeing tips of green,
but that's on older clumps. If we don't get some rain soon, I don't
think they're ever going to get any taller.
Thom, if you took Anna Mae's advice and planted them deep, you may not
see growth for another few weeks. In the first season they are most
tenuous, but by next year, they should be robust.
