planting deeper in cold climates

(I have reprinted a post I sent to the iris-talk this morning. I remember
the little controversy about the deep Siberian planting I mentioned a while
back. This might be of interest to those in colder climates)

I agree. With our consistent snow cover mulch is not needed. I did mulch a
few bearded (TBs) with pine straw as I was mulching the beardless last fall
(the beardless are never without a pine straw mulch). The TBs fared as well
as the other TBs. Not any better or any
worse. I gave up on the 1" of soil - saw no point to it here.

YES. I always plant deeper than advised for all plants in my garden not just
iris. When I mentioned on the Sibrob that I planted all my Siberians deeper
than advised there was a bit of a controversy mainly having to do with the
tenderness of modern cultivars. I definitely plant all bearded deeper than
advised and they always find the correct depth and do fine.

I thought everyone in cold climates did this (with the exception of planting
peonies and lilium) but the amount of 'kill' among TBs in particular in this
area has proved me wrong. Also, all my iris another plants bloom later than
others around here (to say nothing of waiting an extra year to bloom for
some cultivars).
