Thrips

Hi everyone,
I was hoping someone could give me some general information about
thrips- like what they are, how much damage they do, how likely they
are to effect SI or JI, and whether or not taking measures against
them is necessary if you've never had them before. I've had some
unknown siberians for 10+ years and only within the last couple of
years added both SI & JI to the garden. While my old unknowns seem
nearly indestructable (doubling in size every year, surviving me
jumping up and down on a spade trying to split the rhizomes, choking
out daylilies, thriving in a foot of standing water...)I'm a little
concerned that the newer additions are more susceptible to pests and
diseases. Should I take proactive steps, or should I wait until I
have a problem?
Thanks for any info!
