AIS convention = TB convention?

Hello,

When we go to the southern tier of the United States, we cannot expect to see Siberians
grown well. Now, this is not because of the climate in Tennessee (me thinks) but because,
as Anna Mae Miller says, they "grow them like TBs". The ones we saw in BLOOM were very
few and they were growing short - not like we see them in cold weather country. They were
grown in raised beds (I do that, too - sometimes) but they have to be treated differently
in those beds. I saw soaker hoses in TB beds! but NOT in the Siberian beds. This was in
the last garden I saw.

I think that it is a matter of education re the culture of beardless irises. I saw the
same thing in Dallas and also Oklahoma City.

There were some wonderful gardens in Memphis and some of the bearded irises were grown
extremely well. Some of the best bloom I have ever seen on Tall Bearded. Louisiana Irises
were grown well in a few gardens. I think education on the beardless irises' culture
needs to be transmitted to the South and West of the USA (alkaline soil country). Perhaps
we should be 'targeting' the various iris clubs with Siberian culture preferences.

But having said the above, I enjoyed the gardens because I love irises in every class
and I grow more bearded than I do beardless.

The convention was fun because of the people - iris people are so interesting and a
'class' apart!

I came home to find snow on the gardens and it rained here this morning but turned to
snow this afternoon!!!

Cheers,

Ellen
