Potential drawbacks are using this product when you want a well drained soil
such as needed for the bearded irises. The product can keep water
surrounding roots when drainage is desired. It is particularly a problem
with potted bulbous plants. If temps cool down the water laden soil rots
plants with bulbous or fleshy roots.
The formula used may also be a problem as some are biodegradable and others
not. What you have added to you soil base then is unknown.
Another product, Oasis, has similar problems attached to it. I think that
most of these products are designed for professionals and unless cared for
with specific labeling, the home gardener may find them less than useful.
Keeping in mind that in New York, the temperatures and climate is subject to
much seasonal change, I would not use any of these products. I have had bad
experiences and lost plants because of all of them. You cannot use moisture
retaining crystals in mixes for plants held over in pots.
