dividing a clump

I need some advice. I need to take a division off an existing tight Siberian clump. Is there a way I can do so without digging the entire clump? The TB technique of running the shovel under a rhizome and popping the rhizome off doesn't seem feasible with most Siberian clumps. Any and all suggestions appreciated. (I am leaving very shortly on a short business trip and wouldn't be able to response until late tomorrow or maybe even Sat.)
