Is there a way I can do so without digging the entire clump? <<<<

Harold, we probably all have own way of 'doing' it. Here is mine: First off, I decide how
much I want to leave for myself rather than chop off too much. This is not as silly as it
sounds.

1) I use a sharp garden spade (operative word = sharp) which I find easier to work with
than a shovel or a pitchfork (which I also use)....my husband has used an _axe_ but
mainly on Japanese (when I could still grow them, that is)

2) using all my muscle and standing very near the top of the clump use spade like a
cutting tool in one sharp motion (p.s. watch your feet :-)

3) if that works, pull apart the severed clump and put to one side and continue on the
other side of the original clump until you have it down to the size you want.

4) usually it doesn't work for me that easily...then I wing it in full-attack mode using
other instruments of battle that I have handy in my arsenal - have even used a jack-knife
to separate root-bound clumps.

5) when all is done and it will be - I immediately soak or plant the new(est) clump(s)
since I feel that the plant is in shock and needs sustenance that laying on top of the
garden soil doesn't give it. I also water the mother plant, too, after going through what
amounts to an amputation.

Sometimes I feel that I need to lay down after doing a few separations myself but I don't
want to stop traffic by taking a nap with my plants so I restrain myself (usually ;-).
