My method of dividing a small portion of a clump is to use my
garden Chef Knife which I keep sharpened. The blade is sturdy
and about 8" long. Count out how many fans you want in your
division ( I usually get 9 or ten fans) then cut across the clump.
Then I take my shovel and dig out that section I have cut away.
It's much easier than trying to use the blade of the shovel to cut
through the clump and it doesn't seem to bother any clumps I
have done this to. Bill
