Members should read below an extract from an email sent to me some
6 months ago and consider.
Many contributors to this data base are International members and this
is an great example of International co-operation and a win-win for
all.
The SSI is better placed to archive a similar format as most Siberian
Hybridising is a lot more recent so a Photographic records are
available and the Siberian Iris Checklist database is already developed
and is way smaller than the 18700 data records within Daffseek.
The American Daffodil Society has actually
reversed its two decade old membership decline. This is largely
attributed to their rather recent development
and implementation of their DaffSeek database.
This unique daffodil photo database is a query system sponsored by the
American Daffodil Society for the purpose of providing useful
information and photos to their Internet visitors. DaffSeek currently
has about 18,700 data records for daffodil varieties. There are about
18,400 photographs in the database, so the system provides a means to
identify many daffodils visually. Photos were contributed by 199
photographers throughout the world representing 18 countries.
Therefore, the photo you see may have been taken of a flower growing in
Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United
States, or many other countries. In some cases, there are multiple
photos for each daffodil.
This was and is a major effort to visually depict all species and
named cultivars and make it available
free to any and all.
It has generated more interest in daffodils than any membership
campaign, daffodil show or any of
their publications. A 71% increase in membership in five years is
remarkable in a time when all
organizations are in membership decline.
