I think Ellen mentioned two very worthwhile aspects to soaking. First is
keep the whole thing in total shade. This keeps the water cooler. Cooler
means less microbial growth. I have been told that microbial growth rate can
double with every 10 degrees (F for those of you in Canada) increase in
temperature. Second is fresh water daily. Fresh also means less microbial
growth as the growth that has gotten started is reduced and diluted each
time the water is replaced. In reality, I can not remember to be that
reliable. I soak the PCI rhizomes for weeks while they are out of the ground
and waiting for new roots or customer pickup. I strive to replace the water
at least every third day. That worked for me as I had no losses to rot.
