Hi I am Amoret Phillips
New to the list and Irises. I recently began to garden again. My
gardening history is as follows: mostly grown vegetables about 20 years ago
(for about 4 years) and then been mostly not gardening at all since then.
One house I lived in had beautiful blueish/or purple bearded Irises I can't
recall exactly. ( I didn't know enough to take any with me when I moved)
I've been reclaiming an old flower bed that is full of "scruff oaks"
horrible long tap roots and lots of other nasty weeds with huge bulbous root
I call devil weeds. Anyway, I'm in Wilmington, NC and the soil is sand sand
sand. (so easy to dig when there are no roots involved). I started to look
through flower catalogues and drooled over the irises, but felt like I needed
to stay low budget. Then a neighbor said she was getting rid of 3 beds of
irises and would I like any!
I was so excited I went to the web and tried to learn what I could
(after it was too dark to dig) and I dug with a maddoc furiously for 2 days
clearing about a 10 foot by 3 foot space, (in this old flower bed filled with
scruff oaks, etc.)
I happily went to my friends house and dug up these plants and took
them home. I sure hope I haven't killed them! My understanding is that you
break of the back end of the risome and just keep the part with the roots.
Please tell me that's right. That's what I did. I made these beautiful
little mounds and placed the roots on either side and covered the roots and
just barley covered the risome. I cut the foliage back some to keep them
from tipping over. I watered them profusely. I had them planted in less
than 3 hours after digging them up.
I don't even know what kind they are except that they are yellow, she
thinks, she knows less than I do about Irises. She just moved in. I was
surprised to learn there are Iris societies and such an iris following. I
love learning about new things.
Is this list only for one type of Iris? There is so much to learn, I
guess the library is my next stop.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings. I am hopping this list is the
right place for me to learn about Irises in general.
Cordially Amoret
