Re: Moving sibs in Spring

Bob,

Spring is just about the only safe time to do much transplanting in our
area. Our last snow can go off as late as early May though early April is
normal. With luck, we'll have cool, damp weather through the end of June
(This year we were already needing to water in late May.) After that, it
turns hot and dry and usually stays that way until early September. Our
first taste of Fall moisture is usually when the snow settles in sometime
after the first of October.

Young clumps are especially easy to move and the earlier in the season the
better. Make sure they have good soil but unless you're adding compost to
the soil, don't give them any extra fertilizer. The soil around the root
ball will hold enough moisture to keep most of the feeder roots healthy so
water but don't overwater and they should bloom without missing a beat.

Good luck,
Christy Hensler
