Bill,

I don't know that we'd qualify as the type of commercial nursery you mean
since our nursery is quite small and our focus is on developing plants, but
here goes.....

In those years where I have a surplus of Siberians to offer, few sell
regardless of whether they are bareroot for mail-order or potted for nursery
sales. The demand in this area is for the showier Tall Bearded irises,
partly because they have a wider range of bright colors and patterns and
partly because most people haven't a clue that irises of any other type are
available.

Price may also be a factor in our area.... Most plants offered for sale at
the nursery (Bearded irises are an exception since they can be dug any
time.) need to be potted and any priced higher than $3-5 per gallon pot
aren't likely to sell. Regardless of price, nursery sales are a problem
unless a plant can be coaxed into blooming so a customer is likely to see
it.

Tissue culture isn't the answer (I throw more plants over the fence than I
could ever hope to sell and imagine that Siberians increase just as well for
most other growers.). Education of the public about how easily Siberians are
grown and how they extend the iris season may be a better approach. It
certainly couldn't hurt to promote the idea that Siberians don't just come
in blue and white any more either. :-/
