I suspect that my commercial operations are vastly different than most of
the other commercial gardens on Sibrob. I pot much of what I want to sell.
What I currently have potted for the 2004 sales year is 1500 TBs, no
medians, and between 120 and 140 each of spurias, LAs, and Siberians.
In general, I buy wholesale the Siberians that I pot for sale. This is the
first year that I have potted more than 10 divisions that were grown in my
garden.
My sales are usually about 50% from carriage trade (in garden customers) and
mail order from catalog and internet customers. I have had some sales to the
local regular nurseries and hope to expand that portion of the business. I
will sell at any time the customer wants. For out-of-normal shipping season,
I unpot, clean and ship. I sold some LAs and Siberians to a club for their
spring show.
Given that background, sales of Siberians that past couple of years have
been slowly increasing. Carriage trade 2003 sales in general were down from
previous years because the weather during bloom season was rain, rain and
more rain. However as a percentage of sales, the sales of Siberians
increased. One of the noticeable traits each year I have had Siberians was
the enthusiasm of some of the customers for the Siberians. Several customers
came to my garden for TBs but instead bought all Siberians.
My opinion: Sales will never approach one tenth the level of TBs. Seeing
mature clumps in bloom is the only effective way to get any significant
converts to Siberians. Siberians will not be adapted by landscapers in hot
climates because there is no off season supply.

Hello everyone!
I am not clear as to how many commercial members are part of the list, but I
will ask the question anyway. How have the commecial sales of Siberians been
this year and the last few years? What are the issues limiting SIs in the
commercial marketplace?
Bill
