Bill,
I assume that your goal is tetraploidy, since it is a "stable" mutation.
To date, the processes that have been used to convert JI's have been
mostly hit and miss or more accurately, hit and kill. Because of this,
most conversions have been done on seed that are not "too precious". I
have heard several expert hybridizers discuss tetraploidy among JI's and
they feel that JI tetraploids will not come into their own until
conversions are made using better germ plasm. Simply stated, a mediocre
diploid is likely to produce a mediocre tetraploid. There have been more
successes with Siberian tetraploids than with JI's, but I think this
observation is applicable.
"Too precious" is your call, but I would encourage you to use seed from
diploids with traits that you find desirable, whether hand or bee
pollinated. The scientist in me thinks you should used selfed seed, so
that you can compare the mutant child with the parent.
Good luck.
