It seems to me there was a question a while back about killing the iris
borer once the beast had left the rhizome; in fact, I think I asked it
because I was wondering if nematodes would work then. Anyway, I just
came across the following in Nancy DeBrule's Natureworks August
newsletter. Nancy is an organic garden advocate and very careful about
what she uses. I know we don't get a lot of borer activity with
Siberians but it does happen. I'd love to know if anyone has tried what
Nancy suggests.
" If you find iris borers (you will know it: they are thick, flesh-like
worms the
diameter of your pinkie finger, yuck!) destroy them. If you find borer
damage but no worms, they have probably migrated to the soil to pupate
for a few months before becoming night-flying moths in the fall, which
will look for iris foliage on which to lay their eggs. Drench the
surrounding soil with an organic insecticide such as Neem or pyrethrum,
or sprinkle it with the Bioganic insecticide dust. This will kill the
larvae."
