Nutsedge/Manage

Greg,

Thanks for conducting the study on Manage. It spurred my interest as this
is a pest in my turf that persists in heavily mulched iris and daylily beds.
I will put this out next year.

Just sharing some thoughts on this product before it gets used too broadly
(and a great supplier of iris has some residue headaches)

I was surprised to see a product introduced for such a small market, but I
believe the common name for this herbicide is pyrazosulfuron, a
sulfonylurea. (This is a rice herbicide developed for sedge removal). This
family of products is highly active at low rates and many of them do not
break down easily, which is why the label cautions against using this on
anything besides established turf. The label on their web-site includes the
stock phrase "Do not apply as an over-the-top spray to desireable flowers,
ornamentals, vegetables, shrubs or trees." due the fact that no company
dares to say "spray it on top of anything you want except..."

Note: "Color plants or herbaceous ornamentals MAY BE INJURED (my emphasis)
when transplanted into landscaped area treated with Manage," which means
they acknowledge the serious soil residual present with this product--not
all companies are so forthcoming.

I would also be cautious of where I cleaned out my sprayer, since
unbelievably low rates of these products have knock-out power on some
broadleaves. These recommended rates (2/3 - 1 1/3 oz per acre) seem to be
on the high side for this family. I also see "No more than 4 applications a
year with total use rate not exceeding..." such that company is
acknowledging "build-up" of the product is an issue, particularly if you
have high soil pH.
