As an organic grower I try very hard to control pest weeds without the use
of herbicides, and I usually succeed. Nutsedge has been another matter,
coming up profusely through the gravel of my parking area, display area and
in display garden beds. I've come to loathe this plant.
This year I had fairly good luck applying round up early in the year; in
some areas it took two applications. Applying it after the middle of July
doesn't seem to work nearly as well as earlier in the season.
Because I'm paranoid about herbicides and very concerned about drift and
overspray I put the roundup in a wide and rather shallow pail and dip a
cheap paint roller into the bucket. This allows me to have good control and
get great coverage on the leaves. I use one of the stronger percentage
mixes, as opposed to weaker. When working around in-ground plants it is
more difficult, sometimes I surround the offending plant with a 1 gallon
milk carton that I've cut the top and bottom off of. I carefull paint on
round up with one of those black sponge paint 'brushes' that are fairly
cheap; again achieving good control and not threatening neighboring plants.
We sometimes use this same procedure before beginning new garden projects
where there is a severe problem with poison ivy or bermuda grass. I'll
refrain from telling you all about the kind of comments my crew has heard as
we've used this method in several neighborhoods!
