re: leaves in Madrid

I've seen Irises of all types flop over in Iberia when on holiday there - it
can be very dry for long periods. Evansias seem to stand up to it best - I've
seen great patches of I.japonica and I.tectorum growing in even quite shady
places. I remember them thriving in Lisbon Botanic when I was there a few
years ago, although I hear that they have a new head there who is sweeping
the changes.

Much of western Europe (including us here) has had a very long dry period.
Today we are getting our first "real" rain for nearly five weeks - although
being typically British and ungrateful, I wish it had held off until
Wednesday!
