I've used cocoa shells as a mulch for all kinds of things.  I like it because 
it looks wonderful and it breaks down quickly... loosening up clay soils.  It 
also smells like brownies.

If you pile it on heavily, a mold will form, but it causes no harm and will 
disappear.
