Hi Bill and all,

I have used pine straw for the past few years as a year-round mulch.

It is plentiful around here and free. Folks seem delighted if you offer to
rake their needles off of their lawns plus there are large
stands of pines in public place. My current source is an out-of-the way
cemetery in town. Once I located whom to call and ask if I could
collect the pine straw, all I do is arrive with some leaf bags and a bamboo
rake.

Incidentally, this is a very old Jewish cemetery and it is an experience
just reading the gravestones harking back two centuries so it is also a
history lesson for this area. I also have found myself
doing some light weeding of the perennials around some graves for families
that no longer live up here...sort of a thank you for the pine straw and it
seems the right thing to do.
