Hello Ellen,

The incendiary nature of anything from pines is the problem.  A match dropped 
into very dry pine needles will ignite the lot.  The same thing does not 
typically happen to bark and chips though I suppose it could.  I used to use 
the pines needles from several huge white pines we had on one property until 
a code inspector gave me some printed info on the use of mulches used close 
to the house or outbuildings.  I no longer use pine needles anywhere as I 
live in the country with no visible neighbors.  I think it attractive and 
where available a bargain for sure.  But.........it is still a fire hazard in 
dry periods. 

That being said, I could also add for the rest of the list that in the 
Northeast it has rained for about 90 days and nothing could burn here.  We 
are into the first good gardening week since April.  We have also had a light 
frost on Sept. 5.  The season here was about 10 days altogether.

Harold, I have found the name of that really tall Siberian if you would write 
to me.
