Hi Lana, we don't grow Neat Trick though we had it for the 1996 convention.
It grew and flowered well. Shirley Pope has it on her list and maybe Andrew
Wheeler does too.
Appaloosa Blue from Louise Bellagamba has the same white splash pattern as
Neat Trick, but in a medium blue-violet instead of dark purple. We saw
seedlings of a cross by Andrew W. from AB x NT with the splash pattern. But
Andrew should tell you about that. Jan and I have had seedlings with the
pattern but in blue. They were children or grandchildren of Riverdance.
One of the peculiarities of the pattern is that the edges of the falls are
deformed by being pulled up toward the center of the flower. They look
slightly shriveled. It must have something to do with lack of pigment or
substance in the center of the falls. I've made a few crosses with yellow
flowers to see if the white (lack of pigment) could be replaced by yellow
pigment. We might see some results next year. (The mantra of the
hybridizer.) There is also the question whether the pattern will appear in
red or pink flowers. Marty
