Hello to all the iris, both bearded and non-bearded, and gardening lovers
from Dana and Sylvia Borglum.
Bill Dougherty requests our response to the test garden idea and here it is
from Dana.
My thoughts on test gardens (is the same for conventions). The hybridizers
new things are in short supply, but are the ones that need testing. If there
is plenty to send out, chances are they are sufficiently tested already. The
test gardens and conventions want you to give them the plants to cover their
expenses and for their club sales. The hybridizer can't spare the plants, so
sends only "old" plants that he/she can spare. If I were to participate in
this, the test plants MUST be returned -- WITH NO EXCEPTION -- NO OTHER
OPTION! No option to the hybridizer or garden doing the testing. The
hybridizer would pay a fee for the service and would also pay postage for
return of all the plants and their increases while at the test location. The
hybridizer would get an HC or not, directly from the test or it would be a
waste of effort and expense. Then, it would mean something, otherwise why
bother.
My feelings stem from past experiences of plants sent to conventions.
