Chris, the only times I've had a bloom develop way
down in the fan is when frost has bitten the developing stalk, leaving one or
two buds on the stalk--with little or no stalk--to survive. Sometimes
those blooms have been amazingly fertile--abundant pollen, enormous pods.
I've never been reluctant to use them.
Your seedling is a dandy first. Is the
anomalous stalk a result of SA inbreeding or is it frost? But how could
one tell anyway?
By the way, on Iris-talk there is a question from
an Anne-Lisa in Quebec on the VT border you may be able to address much better
than I.
