Neil, 

The two times this has happened to me, the stunted stalk was noticed 
very late in the season, the other plant that did this was BABBLING 
BROOK many years ago after I first planted it.  I personally think 
it's caused by plants that are not well established,  I wouldn't 
blame it on either SA genes or a late freeze.

I didn't see the post by Anne Lisa,  I'll go to Mallorn and try to 
find it and see if I can help her out.  I've really had my nose to 
the grind stone these days.
