Donald Eaves raises the question about the origin
of the "shelf" tissue upon which the beard rests, or from which the beard
emerges--and its relation to the structure and color of the SA
extension.
I wonder how we can determine the answer to this
issue. As Donald notes, spoons and flounces often match the fall color and
pattern. In some cases ( as in INKY ICON) the extension contrasts with the
fall.
I'm guessing, on the basis of what has been
observed, that the spoons and flounces arise from both the shelf structure *and*
the fall petal tissues. I would think this would be fairly constant from
cv to cv, but that does not account for those that have contrasting
colors.
What would we need to do to find out?
