Bill, I believe that the purpose of soaking iris seeds is to remove a germination inhibiting enzyme in the outer shell.
I accept the same premise. I suspect the degree of soaking required not as pervasive as conventional wisdom and current techniques being used by many suggest. Particularly for those of us that the Big Guy blesses with ample, more or less consistent, rainfall.
Beyond violating one of the basic principles of lazy (easiest is best) repeated washing/soaking/draining techniques defy some of natures observed plant survival strategies (grow, bloom, reproduce, defend space, as swiftly as possible) while supporting others (dispersal of progeny over a wide area and protect them against climate variations).
I am now just freezing the seed after a reasonable drying period and keeping them frozen until fall, potting the seed (using several different potting medium and techniques for now), and waiting for the winter rains. Germination rates have been exceptional.
Rain falls on the just and unjust ... and the lazy.
Smiles,
Bill Burleson
