I wonder if that germination ratio is good it works out to something over 50% The current seed are mostly arilbred with some aril crosses and a couple of tall bearded crosses. The aril and arilbred like last season had lost their aril collar in their bath. They are presently planted in peat pellets inside.
Now I have more questions. How would acid effect them. I am to understand that iris can deal with or like acid. How important is light do they need it or not

I hear germination rates offered from 40% on up. With small samples I would think 50% pretty good.

I would expect the acidic nature of peat to have little or no initial effect. The seedling is at first feeding off food stored in the seed itself and water.

As the seedlings grow calcium uptake is retarded at pHs below 6.5 and severely so below 5.5. The pH of peat is often below this value. Calcium promotes root hair growth and plant stiffness.

Light is obviously necessary soon after germination. It is not necessary before. Direct sun does not appear to be a necessity. Dappled shade is adequate during the first few months. Most seedlings here do better with some protection from my sun. You may see the seedlings actually grow taller when light is inadequate. However, they will not have a healthy blueish-green color. Likely they will have a pale lime-green or chartreuse-green color when light is inadequate. (opinion)

I suspect the additional height is a function of lengthened cells and not the production of more plant cells. Regardless of why, the seedlings are more vulnerable to damping off. (more opinion)

As a point in passin', I once grew tomato plants over ten feet tall on the North side of a two story house with no direct sun. They produced not a single tomato.
