Hi Chris,
Thanks for explaining that list and the numbers. Now, it makes much more
sense. There are several sections and quite a list of cultivars, so if people
tried to use all of them, then it could get to be a little overwhelming. If people
who didn't have a lot used what they had, it still might add a little bit. I'm
sure people will chime in on your idea once they get back reading again. After
looking at the list of the SA irises I purchased last year (before knowing
anything about SAGE), only MESMERIZER was on the list, and it is a backup
as you remembered. So, it looks like I won't be able to help much anytime
soon, but it will be interesting to see others' results.
I live in Salt Lake, Utah. We have had a mild winter here, unlike the Artic
area you are living in. Sorry to hear about your Beech tree. Hope you
get things all cleaned up. It sounds like it will be a while before the snow (ice)
all melts. I doubt I can afford California either, but it sure does sound nice on
one of those cold days, especially when Mike Sutton is posting pictures of his
rebloomers.
By the way, in some of the old messages, I found a link to your
website. It was interesting. You had quite a list of crosses that it sounds like
gave you some success last year. I particularly noticed your CONJURATION X
SPARTAN, and STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN X SPARTAN crosses. How did those
seedlings look, or is it too early yet? (I forget what year they were in.)

Hello David,I believe the numbers beside each cultivar were the ones in which the participants grew and voted for to use in the program. As you know, there was 3 or 4 different sections involving many cultivars which may be too overwhelming for the average hobby gardener to take on. This is why I suggested reducing the scope to possibly encourage more participation. As of right now, interest in the project seems to be dangerously low and I'm not too sure many people made any crosses in the SAGE directing this year using the suggested breeders. Of course, as we all know, planning crosses and actually getting the plants bloom and pollinated is a completely different story. My SAGE crosses from last year involved MESMERIZER, which I believe is one of the backup breeders. I'll have to concult the document to be sure since my mind is like a seive ;-)The scope reduction is just a suggestion of mine, I'll wait for others to chime after they have a chance to read the post. Many of the members are in no mail option.Where do you live David ? We've had a lot of snow North of Montreal but is continues to heat up and rain and then freeze again. My Irirses are sitting under about 2 feet of solid ice at the moment. I also had a huge Birch tree blow over on to the main seedling bed so there's a lot of cleaning up to do but not until April when some of the snow melts. A move to California sounds fantastic, count me in as well. One thing is for sure, I will NOT spend the rest of my like in the Arctic like winter climate. Whether I can afford to move to California is a completely different matter ;-)RegardsChrisFrom: sl5knSent: Saturday, February 11, 2006 9:29 PMSubject: Re: [SpaceAgeRobin] Re: SA Seedling + SAGEHi,
I agree with Francelle. I like all of them, or at least almost, but don't have
nearly enough room. Seeing Mike's pictures is very nice. It makes a person
want to try it himself just to see what would happen. Chris's goal of just trying
get a seedling with a SA appendage sounds about right. But then, where would
the seedlings grow? Oh, the woes of having fun. :)
Chris-Yes, it does seem that it's been quiet for a long time. Could you explain
what you are thinking about SAGE by reducing the number of breeders to one
or two? Are there very many people participating now? Would everyone just
use those one or two in an effort to generate larger quantities of seedlings in
order to compare results more quickly?
In going through some of the old messages over the winter, I read an article by
Neil Mogensen called the SAGE Review. It was very interesting. Is that the
current SAGE plan? What does it mean when it says the "list of "1"s returned to
Bill Burleson"? I understood the list to mean to try those highest on the list,
like Thornbird, first, but they also have numbers after them like 12 for Thornbird, and 11 for Mesmerizer. What do these numbers mean?
It's good to see people writing a little again. Only wish spring were closer.
Although, it's not too far. The medians under my south facing window are
starting to send up new growth. :) Maybe I should move to California, so I
could get reblooms all winter long like Mike?

My only goal from the begining was a very modest desire to breed any
old seedling that had an SA appendage and I acheived that with flying
colors last year due to a very early melt. The fact that many of them
were dogs didn't bother me at all ;-) It just gave me hope.
Ironically, I did find a IB sized (don't like the little ones much)
non Space Age seedling which I believe could be from Doctor No x Gnus
Flash that I've fallen in love with. I dug it up and separated it
with hopes that I can work furthur with it and possibly use it for SA
breeding. Somebody suggested crossing it back to Doctor No, but I
love it the way it is now.
For my crosses this year, I have a very strange variety of unusual
historics, Arilbreds and modern Space Agers that I got from
Superstition that I hope to cross together. No I'm not necessarly
after modern form, I still interested in anything "different". Yeah,
that grumpy guy (forget his name now) on Iris Photos might declare in
ugly but that's ok, I find him funny.
As for SAGE, it's been very quiet on the topic for a very long time.
My first thoughts would be to dramatically reduce the scope of the
experiment to just a few crosses with only one or two breeders to
allow more people to participate to start with. Anybody have any
thoughts about this ?
