The main one is the "SAGE" reference. Bill Burleson (aka "Lazy Bill" and "oneofcultivars") suggested the spelled out form of this, wherein SA refers to "Spage Age," G to genetics and E I forget exactly what. Experiment? Endeavor?
The SAGE acronym was originally conceived as "Space Age Gene Effort" at a point in time when we were still discussing the genetic possibilities that might be involved in varying expressions of space age appendages. The project is evolving and swiftly so. From recent input to the project it is likely "genetics" is a better choice for "gene" and "endeavor" perhaps a better choice for "effort". It appears the project may involve more than one gene.
Some other thought lay behind the acronym though. We had for some time speculated on performance of space agers in a helter-skelter sort of way. Fun for sure, enlighted for sure, but for sure in a disorganized way. We were sittin' around on five gallon buckets just talkin' and sharing suspicions and curiosity.
Chris, from the start of SpaceAgeRobin, had been committed to a successful list. He sent personal invitations to a number of people to join. Neil Mogensen was one such person. I, like many for sure, was elated by his entry into the group. He added much.
Too, about this time I was having trouble following, connecting all the posts relative to the genetic speculations. I dislike typing. I am lazy. SAGE saved me a lot of typing. But, even here some seriousness penetrates an iris tracked mind. A good project name is important much the same way as the selection of the name for a new iris introduction is important to those seeking recognition of it's attributes. It must spark the imagination and speak to dreams. It must hopefully attract people and their attention. With people being the greatest real asset to knowledge acquisition, formal or informal organizations, coordinated efforts, and individuals that wish to pursue a common objective the acronym had merit and fit.
Idle mental speculation here concerning posts on other lists and some off list communications had certainly made other than myself wonder why a person of Neil's obviously broad based knowledge, specific iris knowledge, enduring passion for its flower, and so willingly shareing that so many was not widely honored and utilized in formal iris organizations. We even wondered why he did not held office in them. We wondered why he was not now a respected judge in their fold. We wondered if the organizations themselves had become so bogged in rules, devoid of leadership, or so self serving in interest that they had no way to utilize such people and gain the obvious advantages of doing so. I did then and do now wonder, knowing little more than one fact: knowledgeable people attract good people and good people grow organizations. I also have digressed from an already too long story. Continuing:
Patient; respectful; knowledgeable; passionate; kind; sharing; successful and capable in qualities that matter, Neil entered and with these and another much admired quality on his resume. We could all sense the little boy gleam in his eyes even if we did not say so. He intuitively recognized the need, value, usefulness, potential contribution people's inclusion could produce in project results regardless of age, experience, knowledge level, education, or prior accolades- placing input, knowledge acquisition, learning, and willingness before formal recognition. People were afforded an opportunity to play, and still are, at what ever level they feel comfortable. Neil, by aclimation, the leader of a learning experience. SAGE fit Neil.
SAGE is an acronym but also a project, a word, and above all else people. As a word, one definition offered was "a mature or venerable person of sound judgment."
The word fit the project and the people from Kelly a younger sage to Neil an older sage plus all people outside and in between. People, all nineteen on the inside, or wishin' they could be. That's how the acronym SAGE by my recollection came to be.
Smiles,
Bill Burleson
Course SAGE is also a four letter word.
Four letter words are on occasion the only words that allow Southerners to succinctly express themselves without a big long story- I. Tink, a Southern philosopher of little renown or note
