I agree with you and respect your goals concerning your idea of the 
perfect SA iris.  I also agree that the seedling  photo you just 
shared with us is really nothing special except for the flounces.  

Because of my short growing season and harsh climate, I'll never have 
the luxury of being a selective as you plan to be.  My #1 priority is 
vigor, if an Iris is not vigorous, it simply won't bloom.  This right 
off the bat will limit my breeding stock to a few select cultivars. 
Plants that grow like weeds here are far and few between.  The 
following consistantly blow me away with their consistancy from year 
to year.  THIN BLUE LINE, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, CELEBRATION SONG, 
DOCTOR NO, HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE and DEVONSHIRE CREAM are the ones 
I'll attempt to work with because I'm fed up of looking at seedlings 
that refuse to bloom.  I bought some interesting breeders to use 
including FANCY WOMAN, ROMANTIC EVENING, ZEBRA BLUSH, ALABASTER 
UNICORN, PRAETORIAN GUARD, and DOUBLE TROUBLE.  I hope to make 
crosses with plants the can give me seedlings that want to bloom the 
following year.  I'll just have to cross my fingers for decent form.

It's been tough so far BUT I do have some stalks up in my seedling 
bed and I'm starting to get psyched.  Should have some HONKY TONK 
BLUES x THORNBIRD  seedlings open shortly, can't wait !  Remember 
that my first and only expectation from 5 years ago was to have SA 
seedlings of any kind or form so I shouldn't be disappointed this 
year ;-0
