RE: Re: SAGE CROSSES

Hi Patrick,

I agree with your comments about letting the appendages compliment the flower.  SOLAR FIRE did fantastic this year.  Its appendages were consistent with every flower and were nearly flounces (something that you don’t see a lot of in my area/climate).  Flowers had beautiful color and lovely form.  Kudos to Rick Tasco!

I too have heard from many a hybridizer how poor Romantic Evening offspring are. There are so many on the market today that look like RE as well. Hopefully Chris will get that one rare nice one if he has seedlings out of it.

I am in complete agreement with Michael about trying to get consistancy with appendages throughout the country.  We have our work cut out for us.

Which is again, why I feel it is important to have a good looking flower BEFORE you have a fantastic appendage, because that fab-flounce may only come out as a small horn somewhere else, and if the flower is undesirable, then people would wonder why it was ever introduced.

Take SOLAR FIRE, for example (pictures attached, taken prior to introduction).  If that flounce did not express itself, you are still left with a fantastic looking flower that is distinctive and has good form.  It draws you from across the field and by the time you get up to it, you don't care if it has flounces or not.  It is a nice flower in its own right.  Having the red flounces on top of it compliments it nicely IMHO.

Chris;

Reflecting on my observations in our garden, convention gardens and
photos from Patrick, Francelle and others in the southwest , seasonal
temps have a strong effect on SA _expression_. This will mean your task
may be the most difficult but also very important because any SA
seedlings you develop should be hardy and consistent for SA everywhere.
They may not conform to the AIS judges handbook for form but we
certainly would appreciate being able to add their vigor and consistency
to our crosses.

One note on your selections. Based on several hundred Sutton's seedlings
from Romantic Evening it should be considered a very poor SA breeder.
The color/pattern seems to be very dominant and reflected in a high
percentage of seedlings.

Wishing you the best,
