Re: Proto horn on Vienna Waltz and more

Robin, I find this particularly interesting.  I noted that 'Paris Fashion' had a strongly elevated or thick BS, and Venetian Glass also, but less so.  'Vienna Waltz' is producing some very good, wide seedlings.  It looks like we have some good SA potential among this family.

I asked Keith Keppel about this, and said I was getting better seedlings from 'Vienna Waltz' than from 'Happenstance' when crossed with the same thing.  He responded that of the three from that cross, 'Vienna Waltz' has been the best parent of the three for him also.  It also has given better texture in the seedlings.

I had expected 'Happenstance' to be the better.  Not so.

'Venetian Glass' bloomed quite late, and small from a late set rhizome.  It did make abundant pollen, and I used a stamen on 'In a Heartbeat.'  It didn't take.  That was the last bloom on the latter.  'Venetian Glass' still has one open, but the weather has hurt it.  We had a whopper of a thunderstorm around 5:30 am Monday morning.

I do have a few pods that both took and haven't rotted off or had the stem rot out from under them.  We haven't had all that much rain--just drizzles often enough to keep everything a bit wet.  Some things (other than bearded irises) are loving it.  It is a lush year for lawns, some shrubs, the trees in general and late surviving winter weeds that have been hoed out at least three times and just keep growing anyway.
