It appears to me that Sharon's experience and aril-bred SA comments have
genetic implications.
First, the SA's tended to lean strongly to the Eupogon ancestry.
Second, the form issue--noted also in pure tetraploid Eupogons in a post
Michael M made some time ago, perhaps several months ago--Falls tend to be
narrow, as if the capacity to form the appendage used up the potential for
forming the fall structure.
Both of these suggest that the SA trait is strictly on the Eupogon
chromosome (no surprise there), and has to be present in more than a minimal
way to effect SA extensions, and that the underlying linear structure from
which the multi-cellular structure of the beard hair from the Eupogon
ancestry is a necessary precondition for SA expression.
Beard hairs that appear on your seedlings that have them, Sharon, are there
ever any with some evidence the unicellular extension forming the arillate
beard hair appears along the length of the SA feature? Knowing your level
of curiousity suggests you've looked at this question closely. I'm willing
to wager the unicellular hair *never* shows on the SA extension. Am I
guessing rightly?
