I've put a few arilbred beard hairs under the microscope and they were multicellutlar, the same as the bearded iris. I've also seen references that both arils and Eupogons have multicelularbeard hairs.
PS: I got a research quality microscope ( circa 1950) for my birthday. Loads of fun and many interesting discoveries. I will put up some photos on my wesite in a few weeks, when time becomes more manageable.
