Re: [SpaceAgeRobin] Thornbird seedlings and other thoughts

Evening all,

Now that I've had more time to see my Thornbird seedlings settle in, I do in fact find them to be decent growers.  A high percentage of the seedlings (80%) of a cross of Babbling Brook x Thornbird did in fact show horns to some degree.  Seedlings produced fine stalks but many of the darker seedlings showed those "fatal" haft marks.
No such thing as fatal haft marks . All iris have them. Otherwise beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The beard on this one had me looking fo a pix of unicorn to compare. If your goal was to grow SA appendages in Z4 you have certainly gotten some rather dynamic results!

Chris,

If you have the time can you send me your largest jpg file of this sdlg offlist? The beard on the fall in the right side of the foto seems to show the second beard type only on one side of the horn instead of the usual case of flanking it on both sides. Nice pollen too...
See below.    There's one last from this group to bloom and  it's a pink one, should open tomorrow.  The borers ate every last bloom except one so I've got my fingers crossed.

My main complain about Thornbird was all the TB x Triple Whammy seedlings I have growing.  They are pitiful but I blame this completely on Triple Whammy.  It's a terrible Iris with weak foliage, super high stalks and minimal to no branching.

Its all to do with plant balence. Most years I thin about 70% of the fruit growing in the orchard to get fewer but larger fruits. The same is true for Iris blooms. You have to decide whether you want a few large blooms or multi-branching with high bud count and small blooms.
I'm on a mission to destroy all those spathe borers but my luck appears to be running thin because all pesticides sold here in Quebec are now kept under lock and key !!!!!  Consumers are required to produce a permit to be able to purchase these products.   "Blast at all" as the Owl says in Pooh :-)

I share your concern. Diazionon is a banned substance. Most chemicals recommended in iris cult articles are only available with a commercial license and commercial chemical suppliers.

Enough blabber for this evening,
Chris
