SAGE: non-SA seedlings from Color Brite

The second generation back-cross to SA from the uniformly non-SA's from Michael's cross involving COLOR BRITE may be very useful.

Michael, did you happen to observe any of the seedlings having the "shelf" or ledge characteristic?  There has been some hope, and some sound counsel from people who should know what they are talking about, that this characteristic is one to watch for if one desires good SA show-ups in the offspring.  Just curious......

It does sound like COLOR BRITE can tentatively but with some confidence be added to the list that included BLACKOUT, QUITO and others as ones that do *not* produce, or do not produce very many, SA's when bred to them.  One of our significant tasks in SAGE is to discover why this occurs, and why it is possible to get SA seedlings from two non-SA parents.  The SA traits do not act like recessives in most crosses, so there must be something more at work.

An example of this is with YAQUINA BLUE.  The Suttons report on its behavior was that it threw a majority--about 3/4ths--of the seedlings as SA's--flounced SA's even.  Yet, in ordinary crosses, has anyone heard of Yaquina Blue producing SA's?  I certainly have not.

I may try crossing it with SPIRIT WORLD if both bloom this spring, just for the odd chance SA's might emerge since SPIRIT WORLD is a parent of registration record of SA's when neither parent were visibly SA themselves.
