[SpaceAgeRobin] RE: Species history

From Iris by Fritz Kohlein

“In 1884, Heinrich discerned a certain characteristic in the descendants of his Iris pallida, which he called “petaloid over-extension”. He noticed that the lower tip of the beard was detached from the blade of the sepal, or fall, and projected out over it. In certain cases, the tip of the beard could broaden out, allowing the appendages thus formed to enlarge like standards. The beginnings of this phenomenon appeared agin in the 20's in a few Cayeux cultivars. In the past few decades, Lloyd Austin has introduced various clones of this type in the U.S. called “horned”, “spooned”, or “flounced”, depending on the shape of the appendage.”
