I felt sure something was wrong when I only got 22
pods from 76 pollinating attempts this spring. I blamed our very hot March. In some cases, I believe the 99° F.
temperatures of March killed developing stamens in the stalks that bloomed in
April. April had good weather, but irises
that had been easy parents in previous years, for example, Pond Lily and Purple
Pirouette, had no pollen this year. A strange thing happened though. I considered my pod setting time to be over
before I went to the AIS convention, but early in the morning on the 29th
of April, I noticed a Pond Lily blossom just opened near some Romantic Evening
ones. I knew it was useless, but I got
out my tweezers anyway, and, believe it or not, I have a pod on Pond Lily X
Romantic Evening. All my Pond Lily
babies have been pretty, though not all good. The results of this cross should be
interesting. Francelle Edwards
