Hey Donald...
I've gotten my best crosses using Howdy Do and Gladys Austin. I think also that a reason i'm getting such a variety of color is in using some of the old HIPS Iris i have here. I've gotten some really intense greens including the beards by using Green Hat, Green Pastures, and Green Eyed Lady. Spartan, Orelio, and Quechee have given me some of my most intense reds with the reddest horns. Going black has been a dissapointment as i haven't had a solid ebony seedling yet. Lots of dark blues, purples and some strange looking Maroon/brown combos. I've used just about every black iris i can get my hands on
Gotta keep trying tho. I'm glad i got most of my hybridizing done already as this wet weather here is really cutting into my mad experiments.....
As to the horn or not to horn effect. I have had several horns produced from non horned parentage. I have to see if they will stay that way as most don't and wind up regressing to a past relative. I do keep all the ugly ducklings tho, as i believe i will get a swan out of a future crossing.
Vulcan Empress has been my most reliable cross sofar, with that huge thick horn. The multi color yellow/White/Blue trait is from Howdy Do and shows up in 95% of my results.
Hopefully i'll have some more closs-ups soon. I'm praying for a couple of days of sunny weather so i can get a handle of my database updates.
At latest count i have over 40 new SA colors, but this year i've only had about 40% bloom. I think next season i'll have a great show of most of the new SA's.
More l8r.....
Ciao ya'll,
Mike.......

Michael,Good photos. SOLAR FIRE has gone back to putting up some spine horns where the scar is located. CONJURATION is blooming without horns and no sign of any kind of BSE. It appears to be just a normal beard with no membrane, extension or added thickness in the area beyond the beard. It is very sporadic about giving appendages here. Usually the first bloom and maybe the second bloom if it gives them at all. EAGLE CONTROL is maintaining the horns pretty well this year. A couple of blooms have missed a horn on one fall and one bloom had no horns, but mostly they have been there. Those that are missing the horn just look like normal beards to me, as in CONJURATION. Maaaybe a pod forming on SF and EC via the T'bird seedling. Not hopeful about the seedling setting a pod. Used the sdlg pollen on CONJURATION, but too soon to tell if there's any hope. The pollen didn't look great, so the 'maybe' pods may wither in a week or so. Those are all for the TB SAs here. The others are skipping bloom this year.Donald EavesTexas Zone 7b, USA
