Donald Eaves said: "I think the ability to increase and produce bloomstalks
in a clump is more important than the number of blooms per stalk. So how
willing it is to bloom and put on increase that results in a nice clump
would be the key for me. A single perfect stalk with a high number of buds
does not compensate for multiple stalks all blooming in a clump, IMO."
Donald, I definitely agree. Some of my most memorable images of irises have
been, for instance, a clump of the 1940 diploid PINK RUFFLES that had been
in place several years in front of my folk's house. The clump was a mass of
bloom--many bloomstalks, none above BB height, massive color value in pink
on the lavender side.
If my Power Woman ever gets introduced it will be on the basis of its
capacity to put out considerable increase, then bloom on some of it in
addition to the central "bloom" fan from the prior year. The individual
stalks are short of much branching, often having one branch plus spur,
rarely two branches with or without spur, and on occasion spur only, no
branches. Bud count per stalk can vary between three and nine. No show
stalks, but a mass of saturated Royal Purple to Plum Purple with blue
beards, some years tipped lightly with frosted pale violet.
It has inherited the capacity of Romantic Evening to have multiple buds in
socket, sometimes up to four in the terminal, three in the lower branch, one
in the spur. This doesn't always happen--it sure didn't this year!
None of this capacity showed for either Bill Burleson or for Denise Stewart
in Oregon (Snowpeak) on this year's bloom. It will be interesting to see
what next year's plants will do.
The net effect is more colorful than the showstalk producer, just as you
also commented.
