Mike, your comment about the historic WILLIAM A. SETCHELL (1938) as a
potential breeder for large flowers implied this was a "Mohr." It isn't, if
that is what you meant in your sentence. It is from DOLLY MADISON, possibly
by PURISSIMA, although that seems unlikely, as Purissima is not known
ordinarily to produce pollen.
There is another registration somewhere, I believe, from Purissima as the
pollen parent, so on rare occasion it may--as does SNOW FLURRY, also
normally pollen sterile but on occasion does appear to produce pollen--or at
least a small amount. I found some once, but got no takes from it..
William is very large because of petal length, and has form remote from what
would be seen as acceptable by modern standards. Bred to extremely wide,
short-falled varieties, one might gain size, one might not. It is a lusty
grower, as are most Dolly Madison offspring.
An alternative I might suggest is to use some of the unusually
large-flowered ones on the market now, especially varieties with a stalk
that can support a very large bloom loaded with rain drops.
The one that comes first strongly to mind is the violet blue
slightly-bitoned THUNDER QUAY from Geo. Sutton, '01. It has a massive,
wonderfully strong stalk with large flowers. From Silverado X Kathleen Kay
Nelson it certainly has potential as a good parent.
A couple others that have large blooms, although within the normal range,
are YAQUINA BLUE and ALPENVIEW. Both are superlative parents as well, and
Yaquina Blue appears to be quite productive of SA's. I suspect both the
others mentioned would be as well.
