Bob,
There are many nurserys that sell Space Age Irises. You can try
Superstition or Sutton's in California for good service. Riverview Gardens
also has a huge selection of them along with Winterberry gardens in
Virginia. Have a look at the growers section in the links area of the
American Iris Society for hours of delightful shopping.
One of the great breeders is SKY HOOKS but I personally haven't been
thrilled the way SKY HOOKS children grow up North in the snow. Lots of
people like to use THORNBIRD as a breeder as well but it's seedlings are
among the most pathetic growers I've ever seen. I only have two THORNBIRD
seedlings out of hundreds that grow to my taste. Mike Chantry mentioned
that he likes GLADYS AUSTIN and HOWDY DO and they appear to pass of nice
long horns to their offspring. DAUBER'S DELIGHT reputedly passes on
consistant spoons to seedlings and MESMERIZER is supposed to be among the
best to use for flounced seedlings so you might want to start there. What
did you order anyway ?
As for saving and freezing pollen, I've never been able to get any crosses
from stored pollen, I can't figure out why but others here do it all the
time. The pollen should be allowed to dry prior to freezing though.
I'll let the others answer the rest of your questions.
Chris
