Here's what my roommate did about his flourishing tomatoes needing support:
This is hard for me to explain, so attached is a picture of the setup.
Here's what you'll need:
1. 2 2x4's
2. Twine
3. Staple gun
4. Hammer
5. Nails

I agree that the conical cages are no good.
I like (round) cages made out of concrete reinforcing wire
or hog fencing, or "tomato cage wire." I reinforce each
cage by pounding two stakes into the ground on opposite
sides of the cage, and "weaving" the stake in-and-out of the
wire.
