When I cut potato eyes, I cut so that there's at least one cubic inch of
potato flesh per eye. Volunteer potatoes in my yard come from marble-sized
taters or peelings. There's not enough flesh to sustain the plant until
it's on its own, so my guess is that the plant struggles to get
established, then is short on stamina and season to produce larger
potatoes. I've heard the same result from people who've tried to grow
potatoes sold just as eyes. Some places cut out the eyes with melon
ballers, and sell them as "seed potatoes." Margaret L, who also lives in
