Hi,
Did any of our USA members happen to catch the PBS/Frontline/Nova special
on tv Tuesday night: Harvest of Fear.
Unfortunately, I only caught the last forty minutes or so of this two-hour
program on bio-technology, and although they are offering it on tape for
sale, I'm hoping that the program will air again so that I can watch it on
television.
The portion of the program that I saw dealt with issues like "vaccinated"
papaya, corn with Bt already in it, salmon that is genetically modified to
grow four times faster than normal, and "yellow rice" that is being
advertised as the answer to blindness in children in developing countries.
The program seemed pretty balanced, showing both sides of the debate, but
all of it seems pretty risky. They discuss the problem of resistance to Bt
and the possible consequences of genetically modified salmon getting into
the wild, as well as the issue of labeling foods. Of course, Monsanto was
featured in the program.
There is a website on this program:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/harvest/
where you can read the highlights of the program. There is also a video
clip on AQUA Bounty Farms on Prince Edward Island who are seeking
permission to keep their modified salmon in outdoor pens. Couldn't find
anything at the website on the Bt corn, but there are a number of links
that I haven't had the time to check out yet. The links, by the way, are
categorized as general info, pro bio-tech, or anti-biotech. Eventually
there is supposed to be a transcript of the program available at the website.
If anyone hears of a rebroadcast of this program, I'd appreciate a post.
Pat
