Summer l997

Whoopee!!! We are just now getting rid of our snow, I live in Zone 2-a so
will be a while till we can plant outside (3-4 weeks). I have aready
started Giant Tomatoes in the house, also chives to be planted in an
outdoor planter. I also plan on planting green beans, carrots, cylinder
beets, chard, onion sets, garlic, zuccini, turnips, a small amount of mixed
lettus, broccoli (transplants) and potatoes(norlands and pontiacs).
I'm a little embarassed to say we don't like the yukon gold (even though
Ken was born and raised in Dawson City, Yukon). Last but not least, I am
planting 2 Giant Pumpkins ( our area is a very short growing season, but
we will try again this year, for the pure fun of it.

One thing I have read that we can get a head start on corn by starting it
in the house. Can anyone tell me when we should start it how long it
should grow before we transplant it, and if it should be planted in
individual pots or sown in a flat?

Does anyone grow nastursums for the seeds to pickle them? Years ago I
remember my Aunt Verna doing this, she used them in place of capers in
fish dishes. She died several years ago and I have no idea what her recipe
for pickling them was.

Enough for this time. Happy Growing!

Granny Pat
