Hi Janet.
I use thrown out carpeting. In my climate it works well. No mold
or mildew or any
problems with it other than the wind likes to pick it up and throw it
directly
on the plants that I am having the most luck with. (It seems to KNOW).
It even rolls up nicely so that I don't get it muddy when I
rototill.
