I have dug 3 feet wide by 3 foot deep trenches (3) between my beds
which I fill with a mixture (1:1) of mulch from the town and my first
cut grass clippings. Each year the trenches are emptied into the beds
prior to turning and the mulch/grass replaced.
I always keep one out of the 4 beds (10' x 4') out of the rotation and
plant clover, beans and hairy veltch (6:3:1). I also read somewhere
that adding your kitchen scraps directly to your soil instead of
composting builds up the soil faster (?). I am not sure that this is
correct, but this year my best guestament suggests that there were
more worms in this bed than the other three.
The second paragraph is off the subject, but this practice has enabled
me to go from brick hard clay in the summer to beds which require
little effort when turning.
